In-plane selective excitation of arbitrary vibration modes using thickness-shear (d <sub>15</sub>) piezoelectric transducers

Abstract Experimental modal analysis is of great importance for the dynamic characterization structures. Existing methods typically employ out-of-plane forces excitation and measure acceleration or strain analysis. However, these encountered difficulties in some cases. In this work, we proposed an in-plane method based on thickness-shear ( d 15 ) piezoelectric transducers. Through combination distributed PZT strips, arbitrary vibration modes can be selectively excited a wide frequency range. Both simulations experiments were conducted results validated method. Specifically, bending, torsional, longitudinal rectangular bar excited. Torsional shaft without aid brackets bending circular plate with actuators placed at nodal lines. Furthermore, electromechanical impedance PZT-structure system was measured from which natural quality factor directly extracted. Due to its simplicity flexibility, expected widely used near future.
